Open House London 2010

Posted in England, London by folkestonejack on September 19, 2010

I always try and visit a few places during the Open House weekend and this year was no exception. I visited the stunning Daily Express building at 120 Fleet Street, Broadgate Tower, Drapers’ Hall and the Maughan Library (plus a few other places along the way).

The Maughan Library was fascinating to visit as years ealier I had used the building whilst it was part of the Public Record Office. I was intrigued to see how the building had changed and was impressed by how well the redeveloped space worked. I loved the features that had been retained and cleverly worked into the new design, from slate shelves to heavy metal doors. Strangely, it was much more difficult than I imagined to retrace my past footsteps and recall the space I had once explored.

It was hard not to be wowed by the opulence of the interior of 120 Fleet Street and the elegant rooms within Drapers’ Hall but the highlight of the day was probably the impressive view over the city and out to Shoreditch afforded by the Broadgate Tower. The London Overground line looked like an immaculate toy train set from this perspective. All in all, another great weekend…
