Open House 2014: The impounding station

Posted in England, London by folkestonejack on September 21, 2014

The second stop on my Open House tour took me from one station to another – though the Impounding Station in Docklands is an altogether different beast!

The Impounding Station was built as part of the Port of London Authority improvement scheme in 1929 and has maintained the water level in the West India and Millwall Docks ever since. The pumps installed in the station 85 years ago are still in operation to this day and could fill an Olympic size swimming pool in just nine minutes.

I have to admit that in all the time that I have wandered around West India Docks I had never even thought about the technology keeping everything working, so it was good to finally discover the Impounding Station. I won’t take its presence for granted again.
