Brasil returns to London

The Niterói class frigate Brasil (U27), a training ship of the Brasilian Navy, was a welcome sight on the Thames yesterday morning – though I wasn’t mad enough to watch her pre-dawn arrival!

The frigate has been a regular visitor in the autumn over the last few years and she has once again taken up her usual berth next to HMS Belfast for a few days. I grabbed a quick shot on my way home tonight, which also shows the gantry in place whilst work is carried out on Tower Bridge (glass viewing strips are being inserted into the floor of the walkway).

This year’s impressive world tour will take the school ship to Istanbul, Salvador, Fortaleza, Las Palmas, Toulon, Piraeus, Civitavecchia, Palma de Mallorca, Lisbon, London, Stockholm, Helsinki, Hamburg, Le Havre, Baltimore, Miami, Cozumel and Cartagena.

The tour has already generated a bit of press coverage back in Brasil – particularly when the commander of the ship was received by the Pope (who was presented with an image of the Lord of the navigators on behalf of the Brasilian Navy) whilst the ship was docked at Civitavecchia.
