After leaving behind a city which has just said goodbye to an invasion of elephants (the Elephant Parade) it turns out that Bath has just welcomed a pride of lions, which you can hardly miss on a wander around the city. My favourite has to be the King of Fudge (located on the roof of the San Francisco Fudge Factory near Bath Abbey) which looked good enough to eat…

It’s often said that in the hunt for exotic destinations it is all to easy to neglect the wonders you have on your own doorstep. I have to confess to being guilty of this, both in London and in the UK as a whole. For example I have never been on the London Eye, never traipsed the corridors of Buckingham Palace nor visited the Serpentine Gallery. One of the glaring omissions in my cultural CV was a trip to Bath – something I rectified today, taking a trip out from London with a friend.

Naturally, I’ve seen the photographs of the striking georgian architecture in the city but hadn’t appreciated the sheer extent of this until we wandered round the place. It’s not just a few buildings but street after street that has been built and preserved in this style. I took a few photographs, knowing full well that I must be standing in the same spot as millions in the past – taking the same shots – but it’s hard to resist when you have such incredible sights in front of you!

It was just a day trip so we didn’t attempt to see all the sights – just picked out the Roman Baths and Abbey to visit and then took a walk encompassing many of Bath’s attractions, including the Circus, Royal Crescent and Pulteney Bridge. All in all, a grand day out.
